As consumers become aware of how their daily choices and activities affect the world around them, more people are shifting their practices towards a “farm to plate” approach. This shift is allowing people to save time and energy when conducting everyday errands, but also supports local businesses. The environment also gets protected as traffic is reduced both on the shipping of goods as products stay closer to their source and as customers travel less distance for these goods.
To enable the residents of Ocean County to locate local sources of agricultural products and services, the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County published the Guide to Ocean County New Jersey Fresh Agricultural Products and Services. The goal is to help the Ocean County community and those in the Central Jersey area locate the many agricultural products and services within Ocean County. The guide was created by contacting over 150 farms and farmers markets in Ocean County for their voluntary inclusion. The 47 that responded were included in the guide and sorted by town to enable people using the guide to easily find farms and services.
Included in the guide is a list of fruits and vegetables grown in New Jersey and their seasonality, to ensure that patrons who utilize the guide get the best possible local produce at its peak of flavor and availability. Over 500 copies of the guide were distributed to the public at outlets including the County Administration building, the County Connection offices, and many of the dozens of educational programs offered by Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County. Due to positive feedback received on the guide, there are already plans to update this guide and work to include additional farms in Ocean County who did not participate in the current publication.
