Abstract
The Urban Food Production Module is an innovative, research-based educational resource designed to equip Master Gardeners with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement sustainable food production practices in small space environments. Accessible through the statewide UT Extension Master Gardener training platform, this module is tailored to meet the needs of Master Gardener volunteers, providing in-depth content that is both relevant and engaging. The module can be viewed here and covers a range of topics, including vertical gardening, container gardening, soil health in urban settings, and integrating edible landscapes, with each section supporting practical examples, detailed visuals, and links to additional resources for further exploration. Designed for ease of use, the webpage employs a clear and intuitive navigation structure, ensuring that users can quickly locate and engage with the material. Interactive features, such as quizzes and discussion prompts, encourage active learning and provide opportunities for participants to share feedback and insights. The platform’s consistent layout and visually appealing design, including appropriate use of color and graphics, enhance the overall learning experience. The module development team was responsible for generating original written content, curating supplementary materials, and ensuring that all information is up-to-date and aligned with current research. The module’s interactive elements and multimedia integration, such as instructional videos and infographics, effectively demonstrate concepts that can be challenging to convey through text alone. First launched in April 2024, the Urban Food Production Module has been well-received by users, who report increased confidence in applying sustainable practices within their communities. By addressing the unique challenges of urban food production and offering actionable insights, this module supports the overarching goals of the Master Gardener program: empowering volunteers to disseminate research-based knowledge and promote sustainable horticultural practices.
