Abstract & URL
Clemson University Extension's Growing and Marketing Christmas Trees in South Carolina resource page (https://www.clemson.edu/extension/forestry/resources/christmas-trees.html) provides comprehensive information on the cultivation, management, and marketing of Christmas trees in the state and will be valuable to growers across the southeast. This online resource is designed to support all levels of Christmas tree growers by offering detailed guidance on species selection, site preparation, planting, management practices, pest and disease management, and harvesting techniques. The website includes valuable insights into the economic aspects of Christmas tree farming, such as marketing strategies, production costs, and time requirements. Initially released in the 1980s and due to the comprehensive nature of the publication, the South Carolina Christmas Tree Association requested a detailed and updated revision. The publication underwent extensive revisions to update the list of species that can be profitably grown in the state's climate. High-quality, full-color images of native species and various cultivars are accompanied by detailed descriptions of each tree's characteristics. The publication's pest and disease management portion was expanded to include issues that growers will encounter on non-native trees. For economics, a statewide grower survey was used to update the production costs and time requirement tables, making the publication one of the most up-to-date online resources for Christmas tree production. By integrating scientific research with practical advice, this resource aims to enhance the region's sustainability and profitability of Christmas tree production. The user-friendly layout and accessible language make it an essential tool for anyone involved in the Christmas tree industry. Site content was developed through a collaborative effort with agents and specialists working to revise the outdated publication, add other relevant information and include photographs. The Clemson media staff assisted with recommendations for the website design.
