Abstract
This fact sheet addresses a critical and timely issue for livestock producers: ranching in areas where predators are present. The resource provides key agency contacts, practical response guidance, and an overview of legal considerations related to predator–livestock conflicts. The fact sheet serves as a practical reference for law enforcement, local county government officials, media representatives, youth involved in agricultural education programs, and both new and experienced livestock producers seeking reliable information on responding to human-wildlife conflicts and navigating available reporting and assistance processes.
The fact sheet was distributed during the summer of 2025 at a series of weekly community meetings and producer outreach events held in response to ongoing livestock depredations associated with the Beyem Seyo Wolf Pack. During this time, livestock producers in the region were experiencing daily confirmed wolf depredations on livestock and were seeking clear information about reporting procedures, legal protections, and available resources.
More than 150 printed copies of the fact sheet were distributed directly to livestock producers and community members during these in-person events. The resource was also shared broadly through social media channels, electronic newsletter and made available online through the local University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources website to ensure wider access.
Since its initial release, the fact sheet has been updated with additional species of concern, adapted for state policies revisions and changes in staff positions. The document has been local revised by numerous California Cooperative Extension advisors to assist livestock producers in their communities. By providing clear, practical information and centralized contacts for assistance, the fact sheet has become a widely used resource to help livestock producers respond to depredation events, access technical support, and better understand the regulatory framework surrounding predator management in California.
