Abstract

The “Pond Buffer Plant Selection and Maintenance” presentation was developed to provide educational information on the importance and benefits of stormwater pond buffers and to provide insight into native plant recommendations that thrive in these conditions. The presentation also included key information on how to install pond buffer plants and essential maintenance considerations. I was invited to present on this topic at the Grand Strand Stormwater Pond Conference on February 19th, 2025. This presentation was one of four presentations covering stormwater pond buffer topics. At the end of the session, all four speakers, including myself, participated in a discussion panel to answer stormwater pond buffer questions collectively. The target audience of the conference included stormwater pond management professionals, municipal managers, academic researchers, and stormwater education professionals. Of the 55 conference attendees, 38 participated in the post-conference evaluation. Of those who participated in the evaluation, 86% said they learned something that they will apply in their work or future decisions. 15 of the participants said that the plant recommendations and buffer panel were the most useful component of the event. The presentation was created using Microsoft PowerPoint and the Clemson Extension template. The presentation transcript can be viewed in the PowerPoint slides. Educational information that was included in the presentation was gathered from Clemson Extension’s Master Pond Management course and Home and Garden Information Center Factsheet 1855: Shorescaping Freshwater Shorelines.
