Abstract

The photograph depicts a bunch of red table grapes that is infected with summer bunch rot, an important disease complex that affects grapes in California. The grapes are in a commercial vineyard which is the site of a research trial being conducted to evaluate control methods for this complex issue.  The photo was taken by Joy Hollingsworth, Table Grape Advisor in Tulare County, CA. It was published on August 29, 2024 as part of an article written by Hollingsworth and her colleagues in the September 2024 issue of American Vineyard Magazine https://americanvineyardmagazine.com/read-september-2024-issue (see Page 10). This is a trade magazine aimed at grape growers and pest control advisors. The magazine is available online and in print and has over 9,100 subscribers. The article described the disease complex, and how it is differentiated from similar issues. It also described the research trial being done and shared preliminary results. The photo demonstrates some of the key signs of summer bunch rot infection including injured berries, spore masses, and cracked fruit leaking juices.
