Abstract
As the Agricultural Agent of McPherson County, I was asked to do a weekly radio report covering agriculture. This radio spot airs every Monday, 52 weeks of the year on KMCP 89.9FM/1540AM & KMPK 96.7 and 89.9 FM. All preside from our local radio station which is listed as a "Small Market" radio station, with the McPherson County population of 30,000 and a listening audience of 90,000 including their streaming option. We also list these weekly radio spots on our MP County Extension website for community members to listen to if they missed hearing it on the radio. During the radio spot, I inform and update the community on all local and county events and offer helpful tips on anything agriculture. I use research based information that is current and present this knowledge to our local community. I always list a "But First" fact, that people enjoy and talk about throughout the week. Every time I walk into the local Wal-Mart or a church activity, someone always states "you’re the guy on the radio". It's good to know people listen to my radio spot. For this radio spot, I compile all the material I use and ensure it’s meaningful to the wide range of listeners. I have 3 to 5 different segments in each radio spot. My ag spot covers current news and hot topics of the week for ag producers, homeowners and community members. I gather the information in my office, put it in an outline form, then go and recorded each piece on Friday before it’s aired on Monday, at the radio station located in McPherson. I edit each piece by myself in their sound/production room. Once finished, I download the file into their system to air at 7:40am on Monday morning, March 3, 2025. I also email a copy of the recording to our extension office to be added to our website, each week. Getting the agriculture news and Extension events out to more people in the community is a big benefit, and using the radio is a great method to do this.
