Abstract

Extension advisors have the opportunity to work with innovative livestock producers and land managers who are not only leaders in their communities but also collaborators on university research projects. These projects are diverse and cover everything from sustainable grazing management practices to cattle production, wildlife, public policy and beyond. Tracy Schohr, a University of California Cooperative Extension Advisor, has partnered with Steve Lambert on key topics such as invasive weed management using biological controls, drought resiliency, grazing management, cattle health, and disaster preparedness. Beyond his progressive efforts at the ranch level, Schohr highlights Lambert’s leadership on the County Board of Supervisors, where he helped shape a general plan that protected agriculture and played a critical role during the Oroville Dam Crisis and the Camp Fire. Lambert was also instrumental in developing the Butte County Ag Disaster Pass Program, a state model. Alongside Dr. Kasey DeAtley, a professor at a local State College, Schohr co-nominated Lambert for an industry award from the California Beef Cattle Improvement Association where they serve on the Board of Directors. In their nomination, they emphasized the importance of recognizing producers who support their communities and lead by example. Schohr explains that Cooperative Extension agents play a vital role in helping ranchers of all sizes tackle challenges. She believes it is crucial to celebrate those producers who exemplify dedication and innovation through award nominations. Schohr was the primary author for the article, responsible for interviewing Steve Lambert to develop feature article. She interviewed both Logan Ipsen and Justin Hamilton who provided supporting quotes. Lastly Schohr was responsible for acquiring photos and coordinating with the managing editor of the California Cattleman Magazine. The co-author DeAtley providing clarity and editing of article. Schohr concludes, “We should take every opportunity to thank ranching collaborators, and one meaningful way is through industry awards that acknowledge their contributions to sustainable livestock production.” An article about Steve Lambert that Schohr lead writing, was featured in the January 2025 edition of California Cattleman Magazine, with over 8,000 copies distributed statewide.
