Abstract

Now in its third year, the NACAA Leadership Academy has equipped Extension professionals across the United States and Puerto Rico with effective leadership skills and experiences. The academy was established to enhance leadership capacity within Extension, while preparing NACAA members for increased engagement and service within the association. Each cohort begins at the NACAA Annual Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference, where participants build connections with peers and NACAA leaders. Over the next nine months, participants engage in monthly online sessions covering leadership styles, trust, conflict resolution, multi-generational workplaces, work-life balance, and leadership opportunities within NACAA. Small group work is a core part of the experience, culminating in a participant-led presentation at the following Annual Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference. This process builds skills in teamwork, abstract development, and professional presentation. Evaluation results demonstrate meaningful impact. A post-session survey completed after the first cohort indicated that 87% of respondents made changes in their work habits as a result of the academy. Participants also reported increased confidence, improved leadership ability, and significant professional growth. The NACAA Leadership Academy is an effective approach for preparing county Extension professionals to lead within their communities, organizations, and profession.
