Abstract

Leadership Jackson County is a program that has been led by Jackson County Alabama Extension since 1992. The program is designed to develop and enhance community leadership and networking. Participants are provided with diverse monthly experiences called Leadership Days that will help them expand their knowledge of Jackson County. These days are designed so that they learn more about history, industry, agriculture, community services, government, and education in Jackson County. A unique aspect of this program, compared to other leadership programs, is that the participants of the prior class are responsible for co-chairing the Leadership Days for the present class. Co-chairs are responsible for building an agenda, securing sponsorships for meals and travel, and securing transportation if needed. This has been a great way for the current class to connect with the prior class. Results from a post program survey illustrated that participants exhibited a 56% improvement in their knowledge of the county after completing the program. Reviews of the program show that participants appreciate the opportunity for greater networking opportunities, team building and improving leadership skills. Leadership Jackson County continues to be a valuable program for participants that are both current longtime residents and newer residents in the county. This is a program designed for men and women interested in the future of Jackson County.
