Abstract

The Perk Up & Learn Coffee Hour program was developed by the Northampton County ANR Extension Agent to address community needs for accessible, science-based education on conservation practices and sustainable land stewardship. Northampton County’s coastal ecosystems, marshes, forests, and farmland support major agricultural and outdoor recreation economies, yet face increasing threats from pollutants, invasive species, biodiversity loss, and improper land management. The purpose of the Coffee Hour series was to provide a low-barrier, community-centered learning opportunity that increased awareness of local natural resource challenges, built practical conservation skills, and connected residents with trusted conservation agencies. Five free, informal, discussion-based sessions were delivered from May to October 2025, featuring topics such as pollinators, native plants, landowner conservation resources, invasive species management, and forestry. Sessions were promoted through flyers, social media, partner networks, and local media, and supported by NRCS, SWCD, Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, the Department of Forestry, DCR, and the Plant Eastern Shore Natives Initiative. A total of 163 participants attended, with evaluation results indicating that 55% implemented conservation practices and 40% increased their knowledge by more than 70%. The program strengthened partnerships, increased community engagement in stewardship, and elevated the visibility of Virginia Cooperative Extension as a conservation resource. The agent designed the program, delivered instruction, coordinated partners, developed promotional materials, and conducted evaluation to ensure meaningful community impact.
