Abstract
The Central Kentucky Master Haymaker Program is an innovative, research-based educational initiative designed to enhance hay production and management practices for farmers in Bourbon, Scott, and Harrison counties. This six-session program provided in-depth training on soils, weed control, warm-season forages, cool-season forages, forage harvesting and storage, and culminated in an all expenses paid educational trip to the National Farm Machinery Show. A total of 34 participants successfully completed all sessions, gaining hands-on knowledge and practical strategies to improve forage quality and profitability. The program leveraged expertise from University of Kentucky and Ohio State University specialists, as well as industry professionals with over 50 years of experience. This diverse lineup of speakers ensured that participants received up-to-date, research-backed guidance tailored to their specific production goals. Post-program evaluations demonstrated the tangible impact of the Master Haymaker Program. In a survey conducted at the conclusion of the sessions, 100% of participants indicated that the information provided would help them increase productivity, enhance forage quality, or improve profitability. This unanimous response underscores the program’s effectiveness in equipping farmers with the tools and knowledge necessary to optimize their hay production systems. The program’s success highlights the critical role of Extension education in strengthening agricultural operations and fostering economic sustainability. By delivering science-based recommendations and practical applications, the Master Haymaker Program has empowered local producers to make informed decisions that directly benefit their operations. Additionally, the program’s interactive format and expert-led instruction encouraged valuable networking and peer learning among participants, further enriching the educational experience. The Master Haymaker Program serves as a model for excellence in agricultural education, demonstrating the power of collaborative partnerships between land-grant universities, industry specialists, and local producers. Through its comprehensive curriculum and measurable impact, this program has made significant contributions to the advancement of forage production in Kentucky.
