Abstract

Virtual Youth Livestock Judging

Hillary Pope

Several students and parents from the local market hog project expressed interest in wanting a youth livestock judging team. A social media blast was sent asking students to sign up if interested. All the participants were from different counties in the Savannah Valley District, and to help with busy schedules and long travel days, a virtual curriculum was created. Participants meet bi-weekly via zoom from October 2021-April 2022 and once a month in person. During zoom practices, youth reviewed PowerPoints about the different species, judging pointers, and watched videos from livestockjudging.com. At in-person practices, participants were able to meet with local producers while judging. At state, the Junior team placed 3rd overall, and all team members were in the top 10 individuals, and the senior team placed 4th overall. At the end of the year, a survey went out to participants. Results showed that all participants enjoyed the program but did not like the virtual components. It was decided to continue the program with the virtual format for the 2022-2023 year, and there has been an increase in participation with past participants coming back.
