Abstract

The Rutgers Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program is a network of educational delivery programs for commercial growers in New Jersey. The Rutgers IPM programs are designed to help farmers produce high quality fruit, vegetable, and nursery crops by economically and environmentally sustainable practices. Farmers can directly participate in the IPM program and receive a fee-based service that includes on-site visits and monitoring by trained field scouts, fertility and pest diagnostic testing, and weekly pest management recommendations. Rutgers Cooperative Extension faculty and staff collaborate with Extension specialists and county agents to provide IPM information. Management recommendations are informed by grant-funded research and disseminated via newsletters, webinars, fact sheets, and grower meetings organized throughout the year. Recommendations are also informed by crop production guides, environmental monitoring tools, and state-wide surveys that monitor for invasive pests. The importance of the IPM program is to educate growers on pest identification and management strategies, communicate when pests are active and when to time control strategies to be most effective. Ultimately, the IPM program helps growers to make pest management decisions to maintain pest populations below economically damaging levels, reduce inputs and costs associated with pest management, and preserve the environment.
