Abstract

Clear Creek is an impaired sub-watershed of the embattled Illinois River Watershed, and is listed as impaired due to excessive levels of bacteria which are attributed to pet waste from urban areas. Stormwater runoff, eroding stream banks, degraded riparian area, and trash are also impacting the watershed as well. In only 6 months time, approximately 600 or 33 % of 1,800 streamside landowners in the Clear Creek Watershed are participating in this 319 riparian management and demonstration grant. In this water quality project all stakeholders (farmers, developers, landowners, homeowners, renters, governmental agencies, non-governmental agencies, businesses, and muncipal government) are being engaged in a way in which lasting relationships are being forged, high levels of participation is being fostered, behavior changes are resulting in water quality improvements, and the capacity of the Cooperative Extension Service is being recognized among a new group of non-traditional clientele. This is truly outreach and education at its finest.
