Abstract

The Autauga County Extension Office hosted its annual Farm City Day on November 13, 2025, at the R.H. Kirkpatrick Agricultural Arena in Autaugaville, Alabama—its long-standing venue for more than 20 years. Guided by the theme “Grow Alabama,” the event aimed to bridge the knowledge gap between urban and rural youth by providing meaningful exposure to agricultural industries. A total of 671 sixth-grade students from Autauga County and Prattville City Schools, supported by 70 volunteers, participated in hands-on learning experiences designed to increase awareness of Alabama’s agricultural economy and the essential role of farmers in daily life. Educational programming included a live “Birds of Prey” demonstration by the Southeastern Raptor Center; a livestock showcase narrated by Representative Van Smith and facilitated by local FFA students; a drone technology presentation led by Auburn University College of Agriculture students; and interactive stations featuring row crops, tractor mechanics, cotton ginning, beekeeping, and roping activities. These sessions introduced students to agriculture’s diverse career pathways and emphasized its position as one of Alabama’s leading industries. To assess knowledge gains, a post-event survey was administered to four randomly selected classes the following day. Of the 93 students surveyed, 74 (79.6%) reported an increased understanding of agriculture after participating in Farm City Day. Feedback from teachers and volunteers further highlighted the event’s effectiveness in fostering agricultural literacy. Farm City Day continues to serve as a vital experiential learning opportunity that strengthens connections between urban youth and the agricultural community, promoting appreciation for the people, processes, and resources that sustain Alabama’s food and fiber systems.
