Abstract

Cowgirl Confident, developed by Clayton Corner Farm in Afton, OK, is an educational camp designed to empower women in cattle production through hands-on learning and practical skill development. The program addresses key topics such as pasture management, chute operation, pregnancy testing, and tube feeding, serving participants ranging from beginners to semi-experienced producers. As interest in cattle production grows among new and diverse audiences, the need for research-based information has become increasingly critical to ensure participants are equipped with accurate, science-driven practices that improve herd health, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability. The integration of Oklahoma State University Extension has significantly strengthened the educational quality of the program by providing credible, peer-reviewed information and subject-matter expertise. Extension educators and specialists deliver content grounded in current research, translating complex scientific concepts into practical, applicable skills for producers. Through the use of fact sheets, demonstrations, and interactive learning, participants gain access to unbiased, research-backed recommendations they can confidently implement on their operations. Since OSU’s involvement, the program has more than doubled in size, reflecting the high value participants place on trustworthy, evidence-based education. Programming supported by OSU has included topics such as farm management and finance, biosecurity, hay production, multi-species grazing, and corral design, along with livestock health education addressing risks such as the Asian Longhorn Tick. Hands-on components, including chute-side demonstrations and the use of a dystocia simulator, are paired with research-based instruction to reinforce proper techniques and decision-making. This combination of experiential learning and scientifically validated information enhances participant confidence and competence. Participant evaluations consistently rank OSU-led sessions among the most valuable aspects of the program, underscoring the importance of integrating research-based Extension education into non-traditional learning environments. By prioritizing accurate information and practical application, Cowgirl Confident ensures participants are not only engaged but also equipped to make informed management decisions. Future programming will continue to expand OSU involvement through educational series, youth engagement opportunities, and ongoing event participation. This collaboration highlights how research-based Extension education can elevate program credibility, increase participation, and ultimately strengthen the knowledge and success of cattle producers.
