Abstract
Farm transition is emerging as one of the most significant challenges in U.S. agriculture, with long-term implications for both family operations and the agricultural economy. With the average American farmer now 57 years old and an estimated 70% of U.S. farmland—nearly 300 million acres—expected to change ownership within the next two decades, structured support for succession planning is increasingly essential. In Minnesota, approximately 17.5 million acres are anticipated to transition during this same period, underscoring the urgent need for resources that help families plan proactively and collaboratively. To support farm families during this complex generational shift, the University of Minnesota Extension, Minnesota Department of Agriculture, and Minnesota State Agricultural Centers of Excellence jointly facilitate Multi-Generational Farm Transition Retreats. These two-day retreats create an immersive environment where families can learn, reflect, and establish concrete goals for their future. Held at 3–4 locations each winter, the retreats engage approximately 60 farm families annually, representing 120–200 family members across multiple generations, operational roles, and stages in the planning process. A team of 4–6 educators leads participants through a balanced structure of research-based instruction and dedicated family discussion time. Participant survey data consistently show increased understanding of key succession-planning concepts and greater confidence in navigating the emotional and technical aspects of transition. The retreat model is intentionally designed to combine unbiased, research-driven content with protected time for families to talk, establish goals, and align expectations. Participants frequently report that stepping away from day-to-day farm work helps them focus on long-term planning, communicate more openly, and leave with clear, actionable next steps. The program’s target audience includes multi-generation farm operations as well as ownership generations that have identified a next operator, regardless of whether formal succession planning has begun. Testimonials from past attendees highlight the value of the retreat format in reducing stress, strengthening communication, and building momentum toward a successful transition. This poster demonstrates how structured retreats can support families during one of the most consequential decision-making periods in modern agriculture, ultimately contributing to stronger, more resilient farm enterprises across Minnesota.
