Abstract

Floridian Flora Fridays is a recurring educational video series hosted on UF/IFAS Extension Orange County’s Facebook and Instagram channels, showcasing the rich diversity of Florida’s native plants. The series combines scientific knowledge with engaging storytelling, making information about native plants approachable and enjoyable for a broad audience. Each episode highlights species that are low-maintenance, attract wildlife, conserve water, and contribute to sustainable urban landscapes, emphasizing both ecological and visual benefits. Shot in the UF/IFAS Extension Orange County Demonstration Gardens, the videos provide detailed information about each plant, including common and scientific names, growth requirements, flowering or fruiting traits, wildlife interactions, and cultural significance. Edited into concise, narrated reels with music, the content is designed to be appealing and shareable on social media while offering research-based guidance for incorporating native plants into home gardens and public spaces. The program has achieved substantial reach and engagement, connecting with over 200,000 unique viewers and generating thousands of interactions, including likes, comments, shares, and saves. For example, a video featuring Florida’s native skyblue clustervine (Jacquemontia pentanthos) reached 84,669 people, received nearly 1,500 likes and comments, and was saved 133 times. Other posts highlighting Simpson’s stopper, beautyberry, and cocoplum have also consistently attracted strong audience interaction. By leveraging social media, Floridian Flora Fridays amplifies UF/IFAS Extension’s educational mission, inspiring homeowners, landscapers, and community members throughout Florida and beyond. The program promotes appreciation for native plants, supports biodiversity, encourages sustainable practices, and contributes to a healthier, more resilient urban landscapes.
