Abstract

Research shows that farmers experience significant amounts of stress. However, less is known about how agricultural producers at different life stages experience and navigate stress. To better tailor our Extension programming, we conducted applied Extension research to understand the major stressors for middle-aged agricultural producers. Information about this age group of producers is rarely the focus of applied research, as most research funding is directed to new/beginning producers or those aging out/exiting agriculture. We conducted 75 semi-structured, in-person interviews with 96 farmers and ranchers in four states (Alabama, Kansas, Montana, and North Carolina). We selected these states for the diversity of commodities and farming systems across them. All interviews were recorded, transcribed, coded by hand, and analyzed in MAXQDA 26. We amassed a significant amount of data: over 4,750 minutes of interviews and over 2,100 pages of transcription. In our analysis, we identified three common stressors for middle-aged producers: unpredictable events (weather changes, natural disasters, crop failures, herd problems, etc.), farm management choices related to the financial viability of the farm operation, and concerns over farm succession. We also discuss the implications of this research for Extension educators regarding Extension programming and resources for middle-aged agricultural producers.
