Abstract

Beginning a career in Extension is much like interpreting a soil test, which is complex, layered, and full of growth opportunities. In my first three years as an Extension Educator in cropping systems in Southern Idaho, I quickly learned that success in this role extends beyond technical expertise and into relationship-building, adaptability, and continuous learning. This presentation shares practical lessons and personal reflections from navigating the early stages of an Extension career. Experiences ranged from responding to diverse grower needs and organizing field-based programs to developing grant-funded initiatives and translating research into actionable recommendations. Along the way, key challenges included establishing credibility with producers, managing competing responsibilities, and learning to operate effectively in dynamic, real-world agricultural systems. I will highlight strategies that supported my development, including building strong mentorship networks, engaging meaningfully with stakeholders, collaborating across disciplines, and creating accessible educational tools such as workshops, pest alert systems, and decision-support resources. Emphasis will be placed on how listening, adaptability, and hands-on engagement shaped impactful programming. Participants will leave with relatable insights, practical strategies, and a renewed perspective on navigating the early years in Extension. This session reinforces that growth in Extension is a process and a commitment to the communities we serve. If there is one takeaway, it is this: in Extension, you don’t have to have all the answers; you just need the willingness to learn, connect, and grow alongside your community.
