Abstract

Putnam County’s rural setting limits opportunities for youth to explore and learn about the diverse ecosystems around them. The Florida Youth Naturalist program helps bridge this gap by immersing participants in hands-on learning about Florida’s three main ecosystems, fostering a deeper appreciation for local wildlife, habitats, and conservation. Designed for youth ages 10-13, the program was offered in June 2023 and 2024 using a curriculum developed by Florida 4-H Youth Development and the Florida Master Naturalist Program. The three-day camp combined interactive lessons, field trips, and hands-on activities. In 2023, participants explored all three ecosystems, while the 2024 session focused on Uplands. A highlight was the exploration of the Ordway-Swisher Biological Station, where youth observed native species and habitats. Mornings featured educational sessions, followed by guided explorations where participants identified plants and animals, discussed ecological relationships, and engaged in conservation activities. Guest speakers introduced career pathways in environmental science and conservation. Reflections at the end of each day provided insight into participants' learning experiences. Sixteen youth demonstrated increased knowledge of Florida’s ecosystems, improving their ability to identify native species. Many expressed a stronger interest in conservation and careers in natural sciences. Observations and reflections showed a growing appreciation for Florida’s natural resources and ecosystem functions. The Florida Youth Naturalist program successfully engaged youth in meaningful environmental education, inspiring future stewards of natural resources. Expanding similar programs could further enhance youth involvement in conservation and natural sciences.
