Abstract

After my breakout session in Billings last year, I found myself in more conversations about how to actually hold a program that involves food and farm tours than the actual educational component of the program. When we start as Extension Agents, we don't realize how much of our role involves event planning. Many may feel more confident in the educational aspects of conducting a program, but less so in the program hospitality that shapes the overall experience for participants. Some states have strong onboarding or new agent training programs that include information on how to set up a program with food or tours, but many do not. This presentation will walk through building a program from a hospitality perspective so that people keep coming back, continue gaining knowledge, and trust their local Extension service. We will discuss selecting program locations, amenities, food, refreshments, and more.
