LOCATION      The University of Tennessee, Institute of Agriculture, Extension, Central Region Office, Nashville, TN

EFFECTIVE DATE January 1, 2023. Screening of applicants’ credentials will begin immediately and continue

Salary is commensurate with training and experience. The Central Region Director is responsible to the Dean, University of Tennessee Extension. Responsibilities include providing purpose, direction and motivation to the Central Region staff and leadership of program oversight to the 31 County Extension offices in the central region. More specifically, the position is responsible for:
• Representing the University of Tennessee in a positive and professional manner.
• Providing leadership and guidance to County Extension directors as well as Regional and county staff in the successful
delivery of 4-H, FCS and ANR/CED educational programs.
• Encouraging and fostering new and innovative programs; and encouraging programming which meets the needs of a
diverse audience in the central region of Tennessee.
• Ensuring appropriate planning, implementing, evaluating and reporting of program results in each county in the central
region of Tennessee.
• Serving as a liaison between UT Extension, TSU Cooperative Extension, Extension committees and county government
officials relative to personnel, finance, facilities, equipment and overall operation, marketing/visibility of county
Extension programs.
• Advising regional and county staff relative to policy, personnel, and Human Resource issues.
• Providing leadership to recruit, hire, supervise and evaluate diverse county and regional staff.
• Providing oversight of budgets and expenditures for the Central region office and county offices in the Central region of
• Planning for and securing external funding for Central regional programs and events.
• Directing educational programs that meet the needs of all eligible participants regardless of race, color, national origin,
sex, age, disability, religion, or veteran status and implementing the region’s Equal Employment Opportunity Program.
• Other responsibilities as assigned.


• Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, family and consumer sciences, Extension education or closely related field of study.
• Master’s degree in agriculture, family and consumer sciences, Extension education or closely related field of study.
• A demonstrated commitment to professional development.
• Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication and technology skills and an ability to work with various levels of administration, elected officials and state and county government.
• Leadership experience.
• Training and experience in administration, program development, fund development, human resources management/supervision, and financial management.
• Thorough understanding of: Extension education; methods of employee selection, evaluation, motivation and discipline; and management of budgets and facilities.
• Ten years of experience working in Extension.


• It is desired but not required that the successful candidate have an earned doctorate or terminal degree in a field of study applicable for the position.
• Extension leadership experience is preferred, but other experience appropriate for the position will be considered.
• More than 10 years of leadership experience in Extension is preferred, but not required.
