Vegetable Extension Educator

As part of MSU Extension (MSUE), the Agriculture and Agribusiness Institute and the Ohio State University Extension (OSUE) systems, this position will conduct programming to address challenges to the vegetable industry in southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio. This region has growers serving traditional commercial markets, and marketing into regional food chains, and direct sales to consumers. This position will have regional responsibilities in both states and will collaborate across work teams, Institutes, and community groups, working with faculty, specialists and educators in both Michigan and Ohio for the overall advancement of the needs of clientele.

In this position, you will identify, design, implement, and evaluate educational programs that meet industry needs. You will network with county-based Extension professionals in Ohio and provide training to support their work with specialty crop growers. This scope of your program may include programs focused on improved production methods or practices, improved understanding of emerging vegetable production systems, integrated pest management, improved financial management, as well as alternative and emerging markets. Your work will include, completing on-farm consultations, virtual and in-person meetings, and conducting demonstrations. Through engagement with vegetable industry clients, and dissemination of research through various methods, including in-person and multimedia programming and written communications, you will implement programs that lead to changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that improve the viability of the vegetable industry. You will also develop, produce, and deliver vegetable outreach materials with messaging and content that is accessible, inclusive, co-branded and consistent with both MSU and OSU messaging.

Your work will include close collaboration with colleagues at MSU and OSU, as well as the diverse network of partner groups, including the Michigan Vegetable Council and the Ohio Produce Growers & Marketers Association (OPGMA).

Although negotiable, there will be space available for this position to work from the Monroe County Office.

? Master’s degree in a field of study related to horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, crop science, or related field.
