Abstract

Nevada’s agricultural sector is currently facing challenges, with rising temperatures leading to severe droughts, reduced snowpacks, and increased wildfires. These changes have adversely affected public health, water resources, and the environment, necessitating the exploration of resilient crops. Amidst this environment, hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) emerges as a promising alternative, capable of establishing a lucrative market within the state’s unique climatic conditions. This study examines the potential of hemp cultivation in Nevada, considering 4 different varieties during a field trial. Our research asses the viability of hemp through yield and by recording environmental conditions such as temperature and relative humidity throughout the growing season. Other factors such as historical climatic data and the current regulatory landscape that has led to a bottleneck in the industry. With a sharp decline in the number of hemp growers, there is a pressing need for research to understand hemp’s versatility and its applications across various industries. Our research aims to assess the viability of hemp in creating sustainable supply chains for biobased manufacturing, thereby maximizing its economic impact in rural Nevada. We also explore the agronomic practices and environmental factors that influence hemp’s resistance to climate change, contributing to the literature on establishing a modern industry for this crop in the 21st century.
