Abstract
Consolidation within the swine industry has reduced access to specialized education and veterinary support for small-scale and niche pork producers, despite increasing consumer demand for locally sourced pork. This project identified knowledge gaps among small-scale swine producers and veterinarians related to biosecurity, herd health, medication use, and animal welfare. Surveys and focus groups engaged a total of 155 participants from 22 states, including 98 producers and 18 veterinarians who completed surveys, with the remaining participants contributing through facilitated focus groups. Results highlighted challenges in early disease detection, biosecurity implementation, nutritional management, and adherence to veterinary guidance. In response, Extension-based educational resources were developed directly from survey and focus group findings, including fact sheets, articles, short instructional videos, and podcast episodes, to support improved decision-making and animal care practices among small-scale swine producers and the veterinarians who serve them.
